Sulfate-free shampoo and salt-free shampoo are often used as if they mean the same thing, but they describe different parts of a formula. “Sulfate-free” refers to the absence of certain sulfate-type cleansing surfactants, while “salt-free” usually refers to Sodium Chloride.

What Is a Sulfate-Free Shampoo?
In cosmetic use, “sulfate-free shampoo” generally means that common sulfate-type surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are not used in the formula.
One distinction matters: sulfate-free does not mean surfactant-free. A shampoo still needs a cleansing system to remove oil, dirt and buildup. That system can include nonionic, amphoteric or other anionic surfactants, often in combination.
What Are SLS and SLES?
SLS and SLES are anionic surfactants capable of providing strong cleansing and foaming performance in shampoos. SLES is an ethoxylated derivative of SLS. Both have a long history of use in cosmetic formulation.
It is not scientifically useful to classify either ingredient as simply “good” or “bad.” The cleansing strength and sensory profile of a shampoo depend on the types and concentrations of surfactants, how they are blended, the formula pH and the other supporting ingredients.
Is Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate a Sulfate?
No. Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is an anionic sulfonate surfactant. It is not in the same chemical class as sulfate esters such as SLS and SLES. Its presence therefore does not, by itself, contradict an “SLS/SLES-free” or “sulfate-free” positioning.
It is still an anionic cleansing surfactant. For that reason, the word “sulfate-free” alone cannot prove that a shampoo is automatically very mild, low-cleansing or suitable for every sensitive scalp. Mildness is a property of the complete finished formula.
What Is a Salt-Free Shampoo?
On shampoo labels, “salt-free” generally refers to Sodium Chloride not appearing in the ingredient list. Sodium Chloride is not used only as ordinary “salt”; in many surfactant systems it can also be used to adjust viscosity and product texture.
This means “salt-free” and “sulfate-free” are not the same feature. The absence of Sodium Chloride alone also does not prove that a product is automatically milder, healthier or compatible with every keratin treatment.
Are Sulfate-Free and Salt-Free the Same?

Is Sulfate-Free Shampoo Always Milder?
No. A “sulfate-free” label alone is not enough to determine mildness. The complete surfactant blend, concentrations, amphoteric and nonionic co-surfactants, pH, conditioning and humectant ingredients, and finished-product testing all matter.
Two shampoos carrying the same sulfate-free label can have very different cleansing strengths and sensory profiles. Evaluating the overall surfactant system is more informative than judging a shampoo by one ingredient category.

The current INCI list for Mirissa Lab Scalp Care Shampoo contains no SLS or SLES. Its cleansing system combines multiple surfactants, including Lauryl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate.
The current ingredient list also contains no Sodium Chloride. The current web formula is therefore consistent with both an SLS/SLES-free and Sodium-Chloride-free positioning.
The formula also includes scalp- and hair-care ingredients such as Zinc PCA, Panthenol, Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, Inulin, Betaine, Bisabolol, Aloe Vera and Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein. The current shampoo formula does not contain Niacinamide.

What Does This Mean for Visible Flakes and Oiliness?
A shampoo being sulfate-free or salt-free does not, by itself, mean that it targets visible flakes or excess oil. Those benefits depend on the overall formula and the care ingredients included.
In the Mirissa Lab formula, Zinc PCA is part of the scalp-care approach designed to support sebum balance. Panthenol, Betaine, Bisabolol and Aloe Vera are complementary ingredients that support scalp comfort and a cared-for feel. What Should Sensitive-Scalp Users Consider?
