This distinction matters. Evidence obtained with other zinc salts, laboratory systems or different finished formulations cannot automatically be transferred to every cosmetic product that contains Zinc PCA. What Is Zinc PCA?
Zinc PCA is the INCI name for a salt formed from zinc and a derivative of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA). PCA is associated with the skin’s natural moisturizing factor (NMF), and the hydrating properties of PCA/NaPCA systems have been studied in cosmetic science for decades.
However, the physiological role of PCA in NMF does not mean that every formula containing Zinc PCA is automatically a powerful moisturizer. The effect of a finished product depends on concentration, vehicle, accompanying ingredients and the formulation as a whole.
Why Does Sebum Matter?
Sebum is a natural secretion produced by sebaceous glands and contributes to the lipid environment of the scalp surface. The goal of scalp care is not to eliminate sebum entirely. For oil-prone scalps, the practical cosmetic goal is a routine that supports a cleaner, more balanced and comfortable scalp feel.
The idea that “excess sebum simply blocks follicles and causes every scalp problem” is too simplistic. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are multifactorial and are associated with Malassezia species, sebaceous lipids, epidermal barrier changes and individual susceptibility. Oiliness, visible flaking and hair loss should therefore not be treated as if they all arise from one mechanism.
What Does the Evidence for Zinc PCA Actually Show?
Zinc PCA is used in cosmetic care for oil-prone skin and scalp, particularly in formulas focused on sebum balance. Some mechanistic claims repeated online, however, originate from research on different zinc salts or free zinc ions rather than direct clinical studies of Zinc PCA.
It is useful to separate three evidence levels:
- Cosmetic use of Zinc PCA: sebum-balance focused care for oil-prone skin and scalp.
- Laboratory data on other zinc compounds: these can provide mechanistic clues but cannot automatically be assigned to Zinc PCA.
- Finished-product performance: this depends on the actual formula, concentration, directions for use and any product-level testing.
Does Zinc PCA Reduce DHT or Inhibit 5-Alpha-Reductase?
A commonly cited 1988 in-vitro human-skin study found that zinc sulfate and zinc ions could inhibit 5-alpha-reductase activity. The authors themselves noted that in-vivo confirmation would be needed before clinical conclusions could be drawn.
This study does not demonstrate that Zinc PCA clinically lowers DHT in the scalp. It is therefore insufficient to describe a cosmetic product containing Zinc PCA as a “DHT blocker,” a clinically proven 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor or a treatment for androgenetic alopecia.

Zinc PCA and Dandruff Appearance
Dandruff cannot be explained by oil alone or by Malassezia numbers alone. Scientific literature describes an interaction between Malassezia metabolism, sebum-derived lipids and individual susceptibility, with scalp-barrier changes also contributing to the condition.
We do not position Zinc PCA itself as an antifungal treatment. Its role in Mirissa Lab formulas is to support sebum-balance focused cosmetic care for oil-prone scalps. Any finished-product claim regarding dandruff appearance should be evaluated from the formula and the supporting product-level evidence as a whole rather than from a single ingredient.
Persistent or severe flaking accompanied by marked redness, itching, crusting or suspected seborrheic dermatitis warrants dermatological assessment.
Does Zinc PCA Penetrate to the Follicle?
There is not enough direct evidence to present a definitive mechanism in which “PCA carries zinc through the scalp barrier so Zinc PCA works at follicle level.” Cosmetic ingredient penetration depends on molecular properties as well as concentration, vehicle, pH and the finished formulation.
Zinc PCA does not need an unproven follicular-penetration story to have a relevant cosmetic role. Sebum-balance focused scalp care is a more appropriate and defensible positioning.
Zinc PCA in Mirissa Lab Formulas
Zinc PCA is present in both Mirissa Lab Sulfate-Free Salt-Free Scalp Shampoo and Mirissa Lab Night Repair Hair Serum.
In the shampoo, Zinc PCA is one of the ingredients supporting scalp care during cleansing, particularly within an oil-appearance and sebum-balance focused formula. In the serum, it appears alongside Niacinamide, Panthenol, Squalane and cosmetic peptide ingredients as part of the broader scalp-care formulation.
This does not establish a proven “synergy” between the two products, nor does it mean Zinc PCA intervenes in the hormonal biology of hair loss. Mirissa Lab’s approach is to build complementary formulas that address different cosmetic scalp-care needs within the same routine.
Who May Find Zinc PCA Relevant?
Zinc PCA-containing cosmetic formulas may be relevant for people who:
- experience a scalp that becomes oily quickly,
- notice a heavy or oily feeling at the roots,
- want a sebum-balance focused scalp-care routine,
- are looking for cosmetic care for an oil-prone scalp with visible flaking.
For sensitive scalps, suitability cannot be determined from a single ingredient name. Tolerance depends on the finished formula and individual sensitivity.
How Quickly Does Zinc PCA Work?
Universal promises such as “reduces oiliness in two weeks” or “improves dandruff in four to eight weeks” are not appropriate for Zinc PCA as a stand-alone ingredient claim. Results depend on the finished formula, frequency of use, starting scalp condition and individual factors.
For Mirissa Lab products, follow the directions for the finished product and evaluate results against the cosmetic benefits that the product itself is designed and substantiated to provide.
Safety and an Important Note About CosIng
The appearance of Zinc PCA under an INCI name in the CosIng database does not by itself mean that the ingredient is “EU approved” or has a blanket “free-use” status. The European Commission explicitly states that CosIng is an informational, non-legally-binding database.
Cosmetic safety is assessed from the finished formulation, intended use and applicable safety assessment rather than from the name of one ingredient alone. For the same reason, pregnancy, breastfeeding or specific dermatological circumstances should not be generalized from the presence of Zinc PCA alone.
Bottom Line: Position Zinc PCA Where the Evidence Is Strongest
The value of Zinc PCA in Mirissa Lab formulas is not in making it sound more pharmaceutical than it is. Its appropriate cosmetic position is clear: sebum-balance focused care for oil-prone scalps.
Laboratory data involving zinc compounds and 5-alpha-reductase or antimicrobial mechanisms are scientifically interesting, but they do not automatically establish clinical DHT reduction, dandruff treatment or hair-loss treatment for a finished cosmetic product containing Zinc PCA.
