What Is Niacinamide? Scalp Barrier, Moisture & Sebum Care

Niacinamide (Nicotinamide, Vitamin B3) is one of the most extensively studied multifunctional ingredients in skincare. It can also be relevant in scalp care, but its role needs to be positioned accurately. The strongest scientific basis for Niacinamide is particularly in epidermal barrier lipids, moisture loss and sebum-related care. By contrast, claims such as “stimulates hair follicles,” “increases microcirculation” or “accelerates hair growth” go beyond the current evidence.

In Mirissa Lab Night Repair Hair Serum, Niacinamide appears alongside Zinc PCA, Panthenol, Squalane and peptide complexes as part of a formula designed to support a cared-for, balanced and comfortable scalp appearance. Its role is not to act as a hair-growth ingredient; it is to complement barrier-, moisture- and sebum-focused cosmetic scalp care.

What Is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is the amide form of niacin (Vitamin B3) and is also known in the scientific literature as nicotinamide. It is water soluble and biologically connected with NAD+/NADP+ systems involved in cellular energy metabolism.

From a cosmetic perspective, topical Niacinamide has been studied for years across skin-barrier, sebum, uneven-tone and other skin parameters. However, an effect observed on facial skin or in a laboratory model cannot automatically be transferred as an equivalent result to the scalp or to a finished scalp product.

Why Does the Scalp Barrier Matter?

The scalp is a skin region with an epidermal barrier. This barrier helps limit water loss, manage contact with the external environment and support scalp comfort.

One of the strongest pieces of barrier evidence for Niacinamide comes from research in normal human keratinocytes and human skin. Nicotinamide was reported to increase synthesis of stratum corneum lipids including ceramides, glucosylceramides, sphingomyelin, free fatty acids and cholesterol. Topical application also increased ceramide and free-fatty-acid levels and reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in dry skin.

This gives Niacinamide a strong scientific basis for barrier-focused cosmetic care. The study, however, was not performed directly on the scalp with Mirissa Lab serum. The appropriate conclusion is that Niacinamide has evidence supporting a barrier-care role; it would be too strong to state that “Mirissa serum clinically strengthens the scalp barrier” without finished-product evidence.

Does Niacinamide Support Ceramide Synthesis?

Yes. This mechanism has been demonstrated in skin research. Ceramides are major lipid components of the stratum corneum barrier, and mechanistic plus in-vivo data indicate that nicotinamide can increase synthesis of ceramides and other intercellular lipids.

In a scalp-care context, the most appropriate translation of this evidence is care aimed at supporting barrier integrity, limiting moisture loss and maintaining a more comfortable scalp feel.

Does Niacinamide Balance Sebum?

There are human data here, but their limits matter. Controlled trials using a facial moisturizer containing 2% Niacinamide reported reductions in sebum excretion rate in Japanese participants and reductions in casual surface sebum levels in Caucasian participants. The outcomes were not identical across populations or sebum measurements.

Therefore, rather than saying that “Niacinamide definitely reduces sebum production,” a more accurate statement is that human data support its role in sebum-related and oily-skin care. These studies were conducted on facial skin, not on the scalp or with the finished Mirissa Lab product, so the same magnitude of effect cannot be assumed.

Mirissa Lab Night Repair Hair Serum also contains Zinc PCA. Their presence in the same formulation allows oil-prone scalp care to be approached from different cosmetic angles, but co-formulation alone does not establish a “proven synergy” without finished-product evidence.

What Do Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties Mean?

Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant mechanisms of Niacinamide have long been discussed in dermatology literature. NF-κB-related signaling pathways, cellular stress responses and redox mechanisms have been studied in this context.

This scientific background helps explain why Niacinamide is often used in cosmetic formulas focused on sensitivity and environmental stress. It does not, however, justify claims that “Mirissa serum reduces scalp inflammation,” “treats dermatitis” or “stops follicular inflammation.” At cosmetic level, the appropriate positioning is to support a comfortable, moisturized and cared-for scalp feel.

Does Niacinamide Support Hair Growth?

Based on current evidence, Niacinamide should not be positioned as a direct hair-growth stimulant. A 2020 paper titled Topical niacinamide does not stimulate hair growth based on the existing body of evidence examined the proposed VEGF mechanism and reported that Niacinamide did not stimulate VEGF synthesis across a broad dose-response range.

For this reason, we do not use Niacinamide claims such as:

  • stimulates hair follicles,
  • accelerates new hair growth,
  • stops hair fall by strengthening follicles,
  • increases hair density,
  • improves follicle nutrition by increasing microcirculation.

Niacinamide remains valuable in the Mirissa Lab formula independently of these claims: it is a complementary cosmetic care ingredient for a scalp routine focused on moisture balance, barrier comfort and a cared-for feel.

Does Niacinamide Increase Microcirculation?

There is no strong direct clinical evidence that Niacinamide increases scalp microcirculation and thereby delivers more oxygen or nutrients to hair follicles. We therefore do not use this mechanism in Mirissa Lab product communication.

Niacinamide and nicotinic acid belong to the same Vitamin B3 family but are not the same molecule. Nicotinic acid is known for vasodilatory flushing, while Niacinamide generally does not share the same flushing profile. The two should not be conflated when discussing scalp circulation.

Why Is Niacinamide Used with Peptides?

Mirissa Lab Night Repair Hair Serum contains Niacinamide together with Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Zinc PCA, Panthenol, Squalane and other cosmetic care ingredients.

Each ingredient should be assigned a role that matches its evidence. Niacinamide contributes to barrier-, moisture- and sebum-focused scalp care; Panthenol contributes to moisture and comfort care; the other ingredients contribute according to their own cosmetic functions. Their coexistence in a formula does not by itself demonstrate “proven synergistic follicle-cell repair.”

Can Niacinamide Be Used in an Oily Yet Uncomfortable Scalp Routine?

Oiliness and sensations of dryness or tightness can occur on the same scalp. For that reason, scalp care does not always need to focus solely on removing sebum. Existing skin data on Niacinamide and barrier lipids, together with facial sebum data, make it a relevant ingredient in formulas designed to consider both needs.

Absolute statements such as “definitely suitable for sensitive scalps” or “will not irritate” are not appropriate. Tolerance depends on concentration, the complete formulation, frequency of use and individual sensitivity.

What Is Niacinamide’s Role in Hair-Fall Care?

Hair loss can have many causes, including androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, nutritional issues, hormonal changes, illness and other factors. Niacinamide is not a treatment for these conditions.

In Mirissa Lab Night Repair Hair Serum, Niacinamide is not positioned as an ingredient that “treats hair loss.” Instead, it is one of the ingredients supporting the barrier-, moisture- and comfort-care layer of a scalp routine used for hair that is prone to shedding.

Sudden, pronounced, patchy or persistent hair loss warrants dermatological evaluation.

Is Niacinamide More Effective at Night?

There is no general rule showing that Niacinamide works better only at night. Mirissa Lab Night Repair Hair Serum is designed as a leave-on nighttime scalp-care product; Niacinamide is part of the nighttime routine because of the finished product’s design, not because Niacinamide biologically works only at night.

The product should be used according to the current directions on the product page.

How Quickly Should Results Be Expected?

It is not scientifically appropriate to give fixed stand-alone scalp timelines such as “sensitivity improves in 2–4 weeks” or “the barrier strengthens in 6–8 weeks” for Niacinamide. Research timelines are specific to concentration, vehicle, application site and measured endpoint.

Perceived comfort, oily appearance or moisture feel from a cosmetic product can vary from person to person. Mirissa Lab-specific timing or percentage claims should be based on appropriate finished-product testing.

Safety and an Important Note About CosIng

Niacinamide is widely used in cosmetics. However, the appearance of an ingredient in the European Commission’s CosIng database does not, by itself, mean that it is “EU approved” or has an unconditional “free-use” status. The European Commission explicitly states that CosIng is an informational, non-legally-binding database.

Cosmetic product safety is determined from the finished formulation, concentrations, exposure, conditions of use and the product safety assessment. A universal safety conclusion for every user should not be inferred from a single ingredient name.
